The suckiness that is 2020 continues unabated.

A few weeks back I tried to get a meal at my favorite Mexican restaurant over on Page, but was surprised to see the place boarded up. Not knowing what had happened I assumed that the boards were due to the unrest that was happening at the time as well as COVID-19. What I learned today was that they had a fire a few months back. Hopefully they’ll be reopening, although in these trying times I really don’t know if that’ll be possible.

Even though I’m unemployed I did contribute to the GoFundMe page that was setup by a local restaurateur. This place made me feel like I was back home in SoCal with more authentic food rather than the Tex-Mex variety common here in the Midwest. Anytime I go into a Mexican restaurant and see a lot of Mexicans eating there I know it must be authentic. I also look at the menu and see if it has all of the things that I won’t eat, no matter how good they may taste - cabeza, lengua, tripas, etc. If they serve those items I know it’s going to be good. The place isn’t fancy, and is tucked away in a little strip mall. That’s the kind of place I like - unassuming, with the emphasis put on the food, not the decor or location.

“Authentic” is a relative term. My wife grew up in south Texas, so border-style T ex-M ex is “authentic” to her. In fact, the doorbell just rang with a meat delivery. She’s super excited because they were able to deliver lengua. They didn’t have tripas or moyejas, but the butcher said they would hold some for the next delivery.

We have several “Mexican” restaurants in the area. None of them are serving Tex-Mex as we know it. We’ve spoken to the owners of two of them. One was originally from central Mexico and the other was from somewhere in the baja area. Their food reflects the region they’re from.

Its always the unassuming hole in the wall places that have the best food, and, unfortunately, they're the ones least likely to survive the covid shutdowns. I have a feeling Applebees and Olive Garden will still be alive when this is over in a few years, though

I used to work in a building on Bach Blvd. right behind there.

It was always hard to find good Mexican food in St. Louis. Hearing the KSDK reporter completely mangle the pronunciation of taqueria shows me that things haven’t change.
